While you may be used to a fixed rate long term loan, there are other loan products available including indexed loans whose rate moves with a widely published index, like the 1 year treasury rate or the 6 month London Interbank Offering Rate (LIBOR) and intermediate loans which carry a fixed rate for a 3, 5, 7 or 10 years and then adjust to an indexed rate.
