WEXFORD: The Venice Of Golf Communities
Located on Hilton Head Island near the beach, Wexford makes a statement immediately at the gate. One immediately encounters elegant streetscapes, wide vistas punctuated by handsome British West Indies-style homes and deep-water frontage on Broad Creek.
The most dynamic feature at Wexford is the community-wide locked harbor threading it way through the winding streets and fairways. Interestingly this tide-free harbor is one of only three such unique structures on the East Coast. Yachts up to 72 feet long and 19 feet wide can pass through the locks operated by the Harbor Master and tie up right behind their homes, Florida style. Because the harbor is tide-free barnacle growth on boats is kept to a minimum and chafing or damage from wave action is non-existent.
Owners have the option of locating their homes on the water with their boat at the door, on the championship golf course, on picturesque lagoons or on wooded sites leading to either amenity.
Directly on the harbor is Wexford's village center which consists of an elegant British West Indies-style clubhouse, a pool with food service, a new tennis center (another very active group), a children's playground, harbor-front dining, Hilton Head's first tournament-level croquet court and the Harbor Master's Center. And of course, the championship Willard Byrd golf course emanates from this village center.
The golfing members enjoy this meticulously maintained, striking course, another "shot makers" course with narrow fairways and tight, well-guarded greens. Every year the PGA chooses Wexford as the qualifying course for the Heritage Golf Classic.
Wexford offers an image of elegance imparted by the lively architecture, classic stone bridges and elegant yachts resting in the glassy harbor. Some think of Wexford as the "Venice" of Hilton Head Island!
